There is no doubt, many families in Knox are at present, finding it difficult to make ‘ends meet’, due to a loss of income as a result of been stood down, from their jobs.
For those of you who are concerned about how you are going to be able to meet sizable up-coming bill commitments, including Council Rates, this is one of the key concerns of all the Councillors. We are committed to assisting you, in meeting financial obligations to Council by providing payment support arrangements.
That is why at the April Council Meeting a special adjustment was made to the Payments Assistance Policy. This will provide assistance to those in the Knox community experiencing temporary financial hardship as a result of the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. You can apply for a payment plan from as little as $20 per week, if you have experienced a loss or reduction in income.
Zero payment plans are available, if you are unable to enter into a payment plan. The Council is able to defer unpaid rates debt accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic with no interest charged on this debt from 31 March to 30 September 2020, to allow time for the debt to be paid. If you still have a debt outstanding after that time, the Payment Assistance Policy may apply. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Council will hold off on all legal action for debt collection.
In my view, the best way to assist you as a ratepayer right now, is to be as generous as possible, with the payment terms of your rates assessment. If you have suffered a financial reversal during this COVID-19 crisis, due to job loss or drop in income, the last thing you need is to be stressed out, worrying where you are going to find the money to pay your rates, right now!
So, if you do find yourself in this situation, please contact our rates staff, who will assist you to work out a payment schedule you can manage, without penalty.
